INTERNATIONAL STUDENT EMPLOYEE FAQs

Q: How many hours are international students allowed to work?  

A: International students may not work more than 20 hours/week during the fall and spring semesters.  They may, however, work up to 25 hours/week during breaks and during the summer.

Q: Are international students eligible for Federal Work Study?

A: International students are not eligible for Federal Work Study.  Work Study is a form of federal financial aid funded by the U.S. government; only domestic students qualifiy.

Q: Does an international student require a Social Security card to be hired?

A: International students can be hired and begin working without a Social Security card, but they will need to obtain one after beginning employment.

Q: How does an international student obtain a Social Security card?

A: The student follows the steps below:

  1. Students print out, complete, and sign the Social Security Number application form.
  2. Students must obtain a letter from YSU to the Social Security Administration verifying that you have a are a student at YSU and that you have a job on-campus. International Programs Office will supply students with this letter.  The IPO office is located in Jones Hall room 1042.  
  3. The student’s supervisor must sign this form.  Once signed by the supervisor, students can then go to the Social Security office. 
    Students will receive their social security card at their mailing address about three weeks after they submit their application and required documents to the SSA office. 

Q: Can international students work off campus?

A: Yes, in limited instances.  International students are eligible to work for a small number of companies that are not part of the University, but who do business on the YSU campus. Because these employers are not owned by YSU, their open positions will not appear in JobX.  Students need to go to these locations and fill out an application. These employers include the following:

  1. The Barnes and Noble bookstore located on the YSU campus at the corner of 5th Avenue and Lincoln Avenue
  2. Dunkin Donuts located on the YSU campus in Kilcawley Center
  3. Chic-Fil-A located on the YSU campus in Kilcawley Center
  4. Christman Dining Commons, located on the YSU campus near the Cafaro and Lyden House residence halls
  5. Other on-campus restaurants operated by Chartwells, YSU's dining service company. The Chartwells' office is located in Kilcawley Center
