UNDERSTANDING FEDERAL WORK-STUDY

Federal work study is a need-based form of federal financial aid. If a student you wish to hire is eligible to receive federal work-study, you may opt to pay them from those funds rather than departmental funds.  Pending your approval, the student’s wages will be paid from a federal work-study FOAP until their FWS allocation is exhausted.  Eligible students are typically awarded $2,000 in FWS funds per year.

The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships will contact you if/when a student exhausts their FWS allocation.  At that point, you will either terminate the student’s employment or continue the student’s employment by moving the student wages to your departmental budget.
